As leaders, be it at work or in our private lives (and we are all leaders!), we’re often expected to think clearly under pressure, maintain high levels of energy, set a good example and bring calm to complex or fraught situations. But in the fast pace of modern life, its easy to become disconnected from these traits and the very foundation of our wellbeing: our breathing.
Breath-work – the intentional practice of improving and controlling the breath – offers a powerful and accessible tool for cultivating mental clarity, physical vitality, improved performance and deep rest. grounded in ancient wisdom and modern science, breath-work is increasingly recognised as a key practice for high performing professionals, sportsmen and women – and regular folk too.
Intentional breathing sharpens focus and clarity by regulating the nervous system, helping to calm the mind and reduce mental clutter. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, breath-work lowers cortisol and enhances executive function in the brain. This leads to improved concentration, sharper decision-making, and a greater capacity to respond – rather than just react under pressure.
Improved Functional Breathing boosts physical and mental health by supporting optimal oxygenation of the body and brain, which improves energy levels, immune function, and emotional regulation. Studies show that even a few minutes of conscious breathing each day can lower blood pressure, improve heart rate variability (a key marker of resilience) and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. For all of us, particularly leaders, this means greater resilience, stronger presence, and a more sustained performance.
A Functional Breathing practice enhances sleep and recovery. Quality sleep is a non-negotiable for clear thinking and emotional stability. yet many of us struggle to switch off at night. Practice prior to bedtime signals to the body that it is safe to relax, quietening the mind and supporting the transition into restorative sleep, helping us to wake refreshed and ready for the day ahead.
Incorporating breath-work into your daily practice doesn’t require dramatic lifestyle changes. With proper training, just a few minutes of consistent practice each day can make a profound difference. Whether you’re preparing for a high-profile presentation or a difficult conversation, recovering from a high-stakes meeting, or winding down before bed, breath-work offers a reset button that is accessible anytime and anywhere.
As a coach and certified Advanced Oxygen Advantage Instructor, as part of our coaching together, or as standalone training, I guide clients through simple and effective breath-work practices tailored to their needs and life contexts.
